Ain’t No Problem

Monday, June 28th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ That’s right. There ain’t no problems… only opportunities. The only difference is the results—results you will receive when you choose to see the situation differently.

Labeling something as a problem keeps you stuck. Everybody wants to whine about problems.
Now opportunities on the other hand… well, now THAT poses a great challenge to your intellect and character. That’s why people play games. To win. And now you can reframe your problem into an opportunity. Game on!

So, from now on, whenever that ugly little “problem” word sneaks out of your mouth, retract it and celebrate the fact that you have yet another opportunity to show the world what you’re made of.

Have a great Monday!

Generous Spirit

Monday, June 21st, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ As 19th century historian Charles Kendall Adams noted, “No one ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above that is required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction.”

Andrew Carnegie wrote a note in his early 20’s saying he wanted to spend the first half of his life accumulating as much money as he could and spend the second half giving it all away. He did it. In his life, he accumulated a $450 million fortune and gave it all away.

IF he had not lived long enough to fulfill his dream, it wouldn’t have happened. How can you be generous with your time, your help, and your insights NOW?

It’s time for your dreams to begin now. Be of a generous spirit.

Have a great Monday!

It’s Official… Life is NOT Fair!

Monday, June 14th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ And if that’s the case, you certainly can’t prevent unfair and “bad” things from happening… but you CAN manage your reaction to those things. Bushrod H. Campbell points out, “If I’ve learned anything in my 70 years it’s that nothing’s as good or as bad as it appears.”

It’s all in the way you see it and react to it, isn’t it?

Imagine it’s your first day of vacation and it’s raining. That’s horrible. Now you can’t go canoeing
with the kids. Wait a minute. It’s great. You’ll be able to be with the kids in the cabin ALL day with no television. You’ll play games and bond. It will be the best vacation ever. Which is it?

As TV writer and producer Susan Harris puts it, “Anyone can be happy when times are good; the richer experience is to be happy when times are not.” Take it one step further. Why not MAKE your circumstances good.

Have a great Monday!

Thanks for Sharing Eeyore

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Lord Kelvin, one of the 19th century’s top experts on thermodynamics, said “Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible.”

Darryl Zanuck, the producer at Twentieth-Century Fox, said in 1946, “Television won’t last because people will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”

And Elvis Presley was told by a top performer, “You ain’t going nowhere, son. You ought to go back to driving a truck.”

Dream killers abound. They KNOW it can’t be done. And they’re right so far…but they haven’t met you. Your resolve. Your ideas. Your stamina. They don’t get that it’s THOSE things that will make your dreams come true and they can’t kill YOUR dreams…thank you very much.

Cherish your dreams. Protect your dreams from the naysayers. And have a hoot making them happen.

Have a great Monday!

Have You Been Beating up the Boss?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ I just read the statistic from Marshall Goldsmith, PhD in Organizational Behavior, that the average employee spends 15 hours each week complaining about his or her boss. Unbelievable! He thought it was unbelievable too, so he did his own research, looked it up, and found it to be TRUE!

So here’s a thought. Perhaps those same people could re-channel those 15 hours to something
productive!

Let’s hope THOSE people don’t include YOU. Think about it. Your boss KNOWS if you’re boss bashing. At some level, she really does know. Don’t kid yourself. AND, people who listen to you know you can’t be trusted because you’ll bash them. That’s not cool.

But worst of all, you’re cheating you! You will NEVER have a perfect boss. In fact, you certainly won’t make it to boss status because your unkind approach to conflict resolution isn’t going to work.

So why not start today by asking your boss for what you need and leaving others out of it? You’ll flatter him by showing you care. AND, you’ll be amazed how much better your job and life will go.

Have a great Monday!

Can’t Fight City Hall

Monday, May 24th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ You can’t fight city hall. Maybe you SHOULD fight city hall. But, there are some fights not worth fighting.

Earl Nightingale said that 85 percent of people who are dismissed from their jobs are fired because they can’t get along with other people.

Getting along means accepting people for who they are. Yes, Joe is arrogant. Yes, Julie is self-consumed. And sure enough, Tom is a perfectionist. All that can be true.

Know that you can ASK other people for other behaviors, but you may have to accept that some people, not you of course, aren’t perfect.

Fixing the blame is a futile process. Fixing the relationship is ALL important.

All people have strengths and weaknesses and if the weaknesses don’t violate the core values of your organization, create chaos or bad client experiences, or disrupt due to lack of appropriate professionalism, you may just need to breathe deeply and navigate around those flaws.

Fight fights worth fighting and find the joy in celebrating the good things your teammates bring to the team.

Have a great Monday!

Advancing Language

Monday, May 17th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Stop. Stop everything. And think about the last 24 hours. Think of every situation you encountered at work, and at home, and ask yourself if you, at each of those encounters, complained when there was a problem or if you advanced the situation by experiencing it as an opportunity and using advancing language.

Yes, it is natural to complain. It certainly is easier. It takes the burden off you and makes you the undeniable victim.

But, victims are rarely victorious.

If you want to achieve, you must reverse that “easy” pattern of being a complainer and instead ask yourself if all of your language is advancing the situation.

Instead of saying, “those people in accounting sure do muck things up” what if you instead called accounting when there was an error and explained how it needs to be fixed and how important it is that they don’t make that error again.

Next time there is a “problem,” call it an opportunity. Then, march into your boss’s office and say, “Mark, I see an opportunity to fix something. I noticed X is wrong with Z, and I think either A, B or C would fix it. After considering, I’d recommend C for these reasons. Can I begin to assist
in implementing C?”

By using advancing language, you will be stand out as a superstar in no time flat. When would NOW be a good time to start using advancing language?

Sticks and Stones

Monday, May 10th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. IF only that one were true. The worst words of all for most people is their self language. In fact, it is estimated that one word of self criticism is ten times more destructive than a negative word from someone else!

You may have already noticed that people who continually say bad things about themselves eventually come to believe those things.

So, watch your language… Stay away from sayings like:

  • I’m so stupid.
  • I’m fat.
  • I’m disorganized.
  • I’m not good at planning.

Instead, make it a habit to say nice things about yourself. Won’t it be fun to hear yourself say, whenever you have a success, “Gosh, that’s just like me to make good things happen out of bad situations.” Or “I’m so smart to have figured that out.” Or, “Wow, I rock at making strategies
happen.”

You MAY just come to believe all these good things because by reprogramming your unconscious
mind, you will in fact, change your patterns.

Let me start that for you… YOU ROCK!

Have a great Monday!

NONE of Your Business

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ That’s none of your business! Accepting constructive criticism is a trait of successful people. Listening to petty criticism, on the other hand, can destroy your self-esteem.

The more successful you become, the more you will attract insecure criticizers who don’t feel good about themselves and therefore, want to take away from your greatness.

Here’s the good news. Their view of you is none of your business. It may not even have a thing to do with you.

IF you know your intentions are good and you’re operating off of enlightened values, plow ahead regardless of the opinions of others. Great people will always be met with plenty who want attack and hurt. If you stop for a minute to listen to it, you will be thrown off your vision of greatness.

So don’t forget that their opinion of you is really NONE of your business.

Plow ahead and keep on keeping on.

Have a great Monday!

Putting Procrastination on the Back Burner

Monday, April 26th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Put procrastination on the back burner. Procrastination is more than a time thief…it robs you of your self-respect and the respect of others. It costs people their jobs, businesses their profits, and it shuts out opportunities for a bright future whenever it becomes a pattern.

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, in his book The Power of Positive Thinking, describes how procrastination nearly “swamped” him until he did something about it. Here’s his formula for conquering that monster:

  1. Pick one area where procrastination plagues you, and conquer it.
  2. Learn to set priorities and focus on one problem at a time.
  3. Give yourself deadlines.
  4. Don’t duck the most difficult problems.
  5. Don’t let perfectionism paralyze you. IF you put everything off until you’re sure of it,
    you’ll never get anything done.

So it’s time to put procrastination ON the back burner.

Have a great Monday!
