Normalize the Impossible

Monday, June 24th, 2019

People said it was impossible…

but on May 6th, 1954, Roger Bannister proved the world wrong, breaking the elusive 4-minute mile and establishing a new world record that had stood for 9 years!

Even more interesting that the achievement was the world’s reaction. What had been thought impossible, was suddenly just the starting point for even greater achievement.

Less than two months later, John Landy also broke the four-minute mile, besting Bannister by a full two seconds. And within three years, a total of 16 runners had joined the club.

Had the human body changed? hmmm…no I don’t think so. Had the track shrunk in size? Nope. A mile was still a mile.

So what changed? Runners believed it was possible. A limiting belief, a psychological barrier had held others back for years. But one after another, runners began to believe.

The world record currently stands at 3 minutes, 43 seconds. Fancy that.

What barriers have you constructed in your life? What have you deemed as impossible? Imagine infinite possibility. Disallow those psychological barriers and normalize the impossible.

How can you break the four-minute mile in your life?

Build Community

Monday, June 17th, 2019

With family, something is unique. You hurt when they hurt, you laugh when they laugh, you feel what they feel.

But elsewhere, it’s hard to find that same level of genuine support.

For example…

Your son’s hockey team wins the championship and the game point goes to the team captain who scores in the last 10 seconds. It’s great they won, but you and your boy both wish that time you could reverse time and he could score the game-winning goal.

Tim, your buddy in the cubicle down the hall, pretty much just won the lottery with a big deal he closed. And you’re thinking…you’re mature enough to congratulate him, but dang, you begin to think that he doesn’t deserve this kind of luck. YOU deserve this kind of luck! Right?

We’ve all been there. And it isn’t good. More than anything, this ME, ME, ME mentality gets in the way of establishing a sense of community, a sense of family, in the workplace.

Imagine just for a second what things would look like if everyone had each other’s best interests at heart.

When Jim closes the deal, you’re so excited for him that it may as well have been you.

When Mary gets sick, she’s on your mind.

When Sally gets promoted, you’re thrilled.

When Tom struggles with his project, you assist him as if it were your own. When the business thrives, YOU feel fantastic!

A sense of family and community at work—now wouldn’t that be something? So why not make it that way?

BE the source of the miracle!

Under-Promise and Over-Deliver

Monday, May 20th, 2019

Have you ever ordered a pizza, the guy on the phone said it would be an hour, and it shows up in 40 minutes. You’re pumped! But if he promised 30 minutes and it came in 40, you’d be ticked off, even though the result was the same.

Or how about the last time you ordered a widget over the internet? They said it’d arrive in 7-10 business days. When it comes on Day 5, you are one happy customer.

Coincidence? Not a chance. Maybe you’re just lucky? Not unless everybody else is too.

Companies that beat their own promises know exactly what they’re doing. Under-Promise and Over-Deliver.

That way, the same result becomes a pleasant surprise and your stock goes up in the eyes of the customer.

Have a great Monday!

Crazy Busy

Monday, May 28th, 2018

Ask almost anyone today how they are doing and you will often hear the chant “crazy busy.” It’s as if it is a badge of honor. In reality, crazy is just crazy and busy is just busy. Together, it simply shows the person is out of control and not effective in mastering the few most important things.

In reality, many people take pride in being busy. But you never hear a highly successful person say they are busy—and certainly not crazy busy. Instead, they tell you what they are up to or what they are committed to.

In fact, when you proclaim to the world that you are out of control with the words, “crazy busy,” you are pushing away your chance to be successful and truly achieve.

Busy is a four-letter word. Focus your energies on the few things that matter and master how to do those things faster with fewer and better than ever!

Are You Your Worst Critic?

Monday, December 18th, 2017

Are you your worst critic? Why I know that one. I think we all are. But, the thing about that is even though you’re criticizing yourself, it’s also important to make sure you’re celebrating your breakthroughs, as small as they may be. They’ve actually proven that if you spend 15 minutes at the end of every day and you acknowledge all the breakthroughs you’ve had for the day and the successes you have for the day, that by taking that 15 minutes that you can wildly increase your productivity for the next day and beyond, because there’s a brain chemistry thing that basically says what we pay attention to grows.

We are changing the structure of our brain to focus in on what’s working. We’re built to find all the things that aren’t working, yes? Okay, you know how that works, and so, try on the habit of celebrating yourself with all the successes you have. If it’s as small as making the list of the things to do, then checking off everyone, ’cause that feels good, or to at the end of the day, acknowledge yourself for all the great things you’ve learned and all the great conversations you’ve had and all the great outcomes.

Whatever you do, create a habitual process that allows for you to keep celebrating your small successes, because by doing that you will create much larger successes.
