Make Yourself Even More Useful

Useful is as Useful Does

By just about any measure, you’re doing well—happy in your work, your colleagues, your compensation. But you’re ready for a new challenge. After years in the same position, it’s getting harder to find motivation and interest on a daily basis. You don’t want out—you want UP. But how to get there?

You’ve tried hinting. You’ve tried flattery. You’ve even tried waving your hand in the air every time one of the bosses asks for a volunteer, and still you’re marking time in the same position.

The key is to start creating and seizing your OWN opportunities.

Unbore Yourself and Get Out of Your Rut

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

No matter how you feel today, there was almost certainly a time when you were engaged and excited about your job. It may have lasted for years, or not even made it through the first week. But if you find yourself bored and disengaged on the job now, there might be a reason that has nothing to do with the job itself.

According to Susan Cramm, founder and president of the IT leadership development firm Valuedance, the most likely culprit is right there in the mirror.

Blogging for the Harvard Business Review, Cramm offers three possible causes of your boredom:

Appreciation

Thank God it’s Monday!™ “Nobody appreciates me.” “I never get a pat on the back for a job well done.” We’ve heard all these complaints before and most of us have even given those from time to time. It’s no fun to feel unappreciated. But the answer, believe me, is NOT to complain about it. The answer is to become part of the solution.

Most under-appreciated employees are not alone in their misery. They’re usually part of a workplace with no culture of appreciation. The best thing you can do in this situation is to help create that culture. Express appreciation at least 20 times today, not just for what people do around you, but for who they are. Watch the faces of people whose days are made by your simple act of kindness. In no time at all, you will find yourself on the receiving end. When you help to create a culture of appreciation, everybody wins.

Have a great Monday!

Spin Around and Smile

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Children up to preschool age are said to laugh 150-300 times daily, while adults laugh only 15 times a day!

Sure, as we grow older we may discover that we are not as innately happy as a toddler, but we can decide to smile. In fact, just doing so has been proven to instill happiness. In the late 80’s for instance, a study was conducted wherein students were asked to make a “u” or an “e” sound and record how they felt. Unsurprisingly, subjects that made the “e” sound reported feeling much happier than their counterparts, because they were smiling as a result.

So smile. Smile right now. Smile at lunch. Spin around in a circle and smile. Feeling better? I thought so. Create a great Monday!
