Can’t… Have a Hangnail

Monday, July 5th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ You know the folks… the ones who need to go home early because they have a hangnail. But how about you? How resilient are you when you have a hangnail? Well, we don’t care about the hangnails, but would people describe you as fragile or resilient?

Let’s figure it out.

When you lose a deal, do you A: say, “Not a problem, I’ll get the next one and I KNOW they’ll come back anyway.” B: get bummed out and lose confidence, or C: get demoralized and decide to sort your paperclips for the remainder of the day while you polish your resume?

When your boss tells you that your project missed the mark, do you A: say “Thank you for letting me know. Please tell me all the ways I can improve this because I really need to know.” B: make yet another feeble attempt at fixing it with no input because your ego is bruised, or C: spend the next 20 minutes in the bathroom crying about how unfair your boss is?

When you walk into a break room and hear the conversation stop do you think A: they must be so excited to start a conversation with me that they decided to stop their current topic, B: ask “Waz up?” or C: decide they MUST be talking about how strange I am and go home in tears.

EVEN if the dweebs ARE complaining about you, why would you let them get you down? They are simply unaware that they are displaying their lack of good character since you already know that a complaint tells you more about a complainer than anything else.

If you aren’t scoring A’s right across the board, toughen up. Be a reverse paranoid and assume that EVERYTHING is coming up roses, you actually are ON the side where the grass is greener, and everyone just wants to be YOU!

Have a great Monday!

Generous Spirit

Monday, June 21st, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ As 19th century historian Charles Kendall Adams noted, “No one ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above that is required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction.”

Andrew Carnegie wrote a note in his early 20’s saying he wanted to spend the first half of his life accumulating as much money as he could and spend the second half giving it all away. He did it. In his life, he accumulated a $450 million fortune and gave it all away.

IF he had not lived long enough to fulfill his dream, it wouldn’t have happened. How can you be generous with your time, your help, and your insights NOW?

It’s time for your dreams to begin now. Be of a generous spirit.

It’s Official… Life is NOT Fair!

Monday, June 14th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ And if that’s the case, you certainly can’t prevent unfair and “bad” things from happening… but you CAN manage your reaction to those things. Bushrod H. Campbell points out, “If I’ve learned anything in my 70 years it’s that nothing’s as good or as bad as it appears.”

It’s all in the way you see it and react to it, isn’t it?

Imagine it’s your first day of vacation and it’s raining. That’s horrible. Now you can’t go canoeing
with the kids. Wait a minute. It’s great. You’ll be able to be with the kids in the cabin ALL day with no television. You’ll play games and bond. It will be the best vacation ever. Which is it?

As TV writer and producer Susan Harris puts it, “Anyone can be happy when times are good; the richer experience is to be happy when times are not.” Take it one step further. Why not MAKE your circumstances good.

Have a great Monday!

Have You Been Beating up the Boss?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ I just read the statistic from Marshall Goldsmith, PhD in Organizational Behavior, that the average employee spends 15 hours each week complaining about his or her boss. Unbelievable! He thought it was unbelievable too, so he did his own research, looked it up, and found it to be TRUE!

So here’s a thought. Perhaps those same people could re-channel those 15 hours to something
productive!

Let’s hope THOSE people don’t include YOU. Think about it. Your boss KNOWS if you’re boss bashing. At some level, she really does know. Don’t kid yourself. AND, people who listen to you know you can’t be trusted because you’ll bash them. That’s not cool.

But worst of all, you’re cheating you! You will NEVER have a perfect boss. In fact, you certainly won’t make it to boss status because your unkind approach to conflict resolution isn’t going to work.

So why not start today by asking your boss for what you need and leaving others out of it? You’ll flatter him by showing you care. AND, you’ll be amazed how much better your job and life will go.

Have a great Monday!

Sticks and Stones

Monday, May 10th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. IF only that one were true. The worst words of all for most people is their self language. In fact, it is estimated that one word of self criticism is ten times more destructive than a negative word from someone else!

You may have already noticed that people who continually say bad things about themselves eventually come to believe those things.

So, watch your language… Stay away from sayings like:

  • I’m so stupid.
  • I’m fat.
  • I’m disorganized.
  • I’m not good at planning.

Instead, make it a habit to say nice things about yourself. Won’t it be fun to hear yourself say, whenever you have a success, “Gosh, that’s just like me to make good things happen out of bad situations.” Or “I’m so smart to have figured that out.” Or, “Wow, I rock at making strategies
happen.”

You MAY just come to believe all these good things because by reprogramming your unconscious
mind, you will in fact, change your patterns.

Let me start that for you… YOU ROCK!

Have a great Monday!

Love on Wheels

Monday, March 29th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Are YOU love on wheels? Now, I KNOW you’re a little concerned, when you heard the title, about where this title is going. So, let’s just get started.

We’ve all met that person who is simply, “love on wheels.” He constantly shows he cares. She always goes above and beyond. He sees the possibilities in you. She sees you blew it and affirms
you with a, “I know you’ll get this. Don’t you give up.”

Love is a word that isn’t used much in business and I suspect business would go better if it was. When we choose to always do the loving thing, spread the joy, build up our team members, provide tough love at the appropriate times, we know that not only will our business go well, but life will go well too.

Know that every one of us is called to a higher place of going beyond transactions, to being transformative for our team members and our families.

Set the intention to think of yourself as “love on wheels”—going gracefully through life spreading
your pixie dust on those around you and making the world a better place.

Massive, Corrective Action Plan

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Yep, you blew it. It happens to those of us who are mere mortals. We make mistakes… we miss deadlines… we just plain blow it sometimes. Contrary to popular belief, the next step after blowing it isn’t to wallow in guilt and shame.

The next step is to express heartfelt concern to those impacted, and to provide them with your “massive corrective action plan” to get the task back on track or to make sure it never happens again. When you recover with ease, grace, and gusto, you will be trusted, loved and held in high esteem by your team members and clients.

Nobody expects you to be perfect… but they do expect you to show that you care. So be prepared
with your massive corrective action plan next time something goes wrong.

Done and Done

Monday, March 15th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ How do you bring things to closure? You may find that the more loose ends you have in life, the more exhausted you feel each day. Loose ends are overwhelming while closure can energize you.

When somebody gives you a project, do you ask if it is due immediately or ask for a deadline? If there is a deadline, do you do the next step to have the next level of closure scheduled as a task so it is captured? If you don’t, I suspect you’re already feeling the exhaustion of the task. Items where next steps are not planned and recorded for follow up cause great stress.

Then, when the task is complete, do you always bring it to the person who assigned the task and say, “I think this is complete… Is this what you wanted?” If so, you can take it off your list—WOOHOO!

Remember a task is not complete UNTIL you know it met the conditions of satisfaction of the person assigning it to you and they have signed off. Or, if it was a simple request, and you KNOW you met the conditions of satisfaction, a simple email that says, “Done and done” will close that loop.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Monday, March 8th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ I recently heard a great analogy at a conference about how to bring great wisdom into our lives. I just have to share it with you. Remember the song: Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream? I’m really glad I didn’t have to sing for you. Now, I KNOW this doesn’t sound like rocket science but actually, it’s better than rocket science. Let’s dissect it.

Row YOUR boat… not somebody else’s. In other words, keep your nose clean out of other people’s business. If you stay solidly focused on YOUR boat, you can achieve greatness with sanity.

Gently down the stream…

It doesn’t say create a battle… It doesn’t say go up the stream… so stop making things so hard. Choose ease and grace.

Merrily… yes, that is a choice. You can encounter mosquitoes to swat, rapids, and all of life’s speed bumps, but YOU get to choose to meet each one MERRILY—but that is a choice and that choice is YOURS. You get to make it and it is a dream, it is your dream. You get to create as much joy, abundance, and love as you want in your dream or as much heart ache, pain, and struggle. Just by changing your attitude, the ride down the stream turns to a beautiful experience.

Enjoy YOUR trip.

Have a great Monday!
