The Company You Keep

Parents are full of advice for their kids. Some of it doesn’t hold up (my face did NOT stay that way, Dad), and some is golden.

A lot of the best advice we give our kids translates just as well into adult life. But too often we fail to apply it to ourselves, as if there’s something magic about the age eighteen that turns golden advice to straw. And that’s too bad.

One of the things I remember Mom drumming into my head is the importance of choosing my friends wisely. Nothing has a greater influence on the person you’ll become, she said. I’m sure I rolled my eyes at the time. But over the years, I’ve come to realize that it’s the single best piece of wisdom she ever gave me.

We’ve all had the experience of reflecting the people around us. If you are surrounded by grousers and whiners, you naturally feel yourself falling into a pattern of grousing and whining, partly because the grousing whiners will reward you for being like them. So how could you not?

On the other hand, when you surround yourself with people who are positive and optimistic and happy to be alive, you can’t help feeling the same.

I have several dear friends now who have that effect on me. When I’m around them, their smiles, their infectious laughs, and their ability to find the joy in life naturally puts me in the same frame of mind. I leave a restaurant or a party with these people and find myself smiling more, opening doors for others, letting people merge on the freeway. The effect is immediate and undeniable.

And it goes well beyond mood. If we want to achieve lasting changes in the way we approach our work and our lives, the very best thing we can do is surround ourselves with people who share those values. Want to be more punctual? Hang out with people who are punctual. Want to see the work you do in terms of service to others instead of a means to support yourself? You know what to do.

Most important of all, you want to choose friends and associates who share the deeper, more fundamental attitudes toward life. Choose to be around people who are enlightened learners, who choose wisdom, who take the high road, who have a heart of kindness, who decide to persevere. Surround yourself with people of strong character because they will hold you to a high standard. Just as the grousing whiners reinforce attitudes and behaviors that are like theirs, so will the decent and wise.

So sure, read all the books you can to improve who you are and how you approach life. But know that the greatest influence of all happens not between the covers of a book, but between people.

Thank God it’s Monday!™ One of the best ways to improve your happiness is to decide to move to a state of gratitude. That’s right. Appreciate what you have, every day. I know, I know, you have college tuition payments coming and you’re short, you have a boss who is asking more than is humanly possible, and you don’t have a clue how to keep it all together.

Well, breathe and begin to appreciate what you have. You have a job. You have a boss who cares enough to coach you. You have two arms and two legs that function. Your heart is beating and your white blood cells are working to keep you alive. You get the point.

There is always so much to appreciate, so be in a state of gratitude.

Start by approaching five people in your workplace and letting them know what you appreciate about them. I guarantee you will feel closer to them and enjoy them more just by having done this experience.

Gratitude changes results, so step on up and indulge by wildly giving gratitude.

Let’s Get It Started!

There’s a song I love to play over the loudspeakers at my public events. The song is “Let’s Get it Started” by the Black-Eyed Peas, and we use it to call everybody back from break, to pump them up and get them ready to GET IT STARTED again!

We could use just about any high-energy song to get people’s attention, but this one has something special, and its right there in the title––Let’s get it started. It doesn’t say, “Let’s hope somebody else gets it started.” It’s about US, you and me, getting started and making things happen.

Maybe you’re playing a waiting game in your company, waiting for management to get the memo and start making a positive culture change happen. You’ve filled out enough suggestion cards to fill the old card catalog at the New York Public Library. Maybe you’ve even dropped a few heavy hints in person. Nothing. Ever. Happens.

Time to stop waiting. It’s time to get it started.

Culture change is first and foremost about a change in attitudes. It’s about making people feel appreciated, giving them a common goal, and helping them to have fun in the process. NONE of these requires a lot of money or time, and best of all, NONE requires the involvement of the head honchos.

Still, you don’t have to do this all alone. Certainly there are two or three other people who would like to see your workplace transformed. Put together an informal group––a “coalition of the willing”––and brainstorm ways to turn the place around. There is nothing more fun than taking the bull by the horns and watching as you turn around not just a workplace, but the lives of the people who spend half of their waking hours IN that workplace.

Here are three ways to get it started:

1. Create your own contest. If you know your company has an objective to sell 750 widgets a month, create a contest. Split your staff into teams. Have them report daily and put points for sales up on a white board. Hoot and holler, give out prizes for individuals and teams. Prizes don’t have to be expensive—people will knock themselves out for a chocolate kiss.

2. Start a low-key campaign against dysfunctional behaviors. Quietly enlist as many co-workers as possible in a pact to not engage in gossip, backstabbing, whining, or nay-saying, and to gently call others on it when they hear it in action.

3. Connect. It’s easy to crawl into our shells, keep our eyes on the floor, and forget that we’re surrounded by actual no-kidding people all day. Make an effort to meet the eyes of your co-workers. Smile and say hello. Ask about the family. This isn’t rocket science––but these simple connections can do more for transforming a workplace culture than the most elaborate system of incentives.

At the end of the first month, pull the team together to take a reading. Odds are very good that you’ll see evidence everywhere that things will never be the same.

Do I Haaave To?

Thank God it’s Monday!™ You hear it all the time. I have to pick up my kids. I have to go to work now. I have to do that project.

What if you changed your language to say I get to pick up the kids now? I get to go to work now. And I get to do that project.

Wow, don’t you just feel better already?

Our language reveals our inner most thoughts, and if you are a “have to” person, you are revealing that you live your life primarily within the “victim archetype.” Ouch. That doesn’t feel good to think about. But, the truth will, you know… set you free.

Simply by changing your language, you’ll feel better about your life because you’ve taken yourself out of the victim role and putting yourself into a powerful position of being at choice.

And yes, you get to choose the language every day.

Your Vulnerability is Your Strength

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Being a human can be a little rough some times. In our minds, we want to be perfect. Then, we find out, SURPRISE, we’re not. Dang. When we make that discovery, we immediately begin to beat ourselves up. But that lowers our self-esteem causing us to, well, mess up even more. And now the downward spiral is in place and the suck hole owns our self-esteem.

How do you break the pattern? How do you get your self-esteem back when you discover that you really aren’t that organized and that sometimes your ideas aren’t that perfect?

By getting real. Simply telling the people around you, “Hey, I’m working hard on getting
organized and sometimes, in the past, I know I’ve been a bit of a train wreck. Know that I’m working on it and I’m coachable if you have advice that could help me.”

Bam! Just one authentic conversation and suddenly two really great things will happen. First, people will stop beating you up for being such a mess AND they’ll step in to help. More important, you’ll feel better about you because you’ve been authentic and put the truth out there.

Watch Your Mouth

Thank God it’s Monday!™ You perhaps have heard the saying, “Big minds talk about ideas, normal minds talk about news, and small minds talk about others.”

What comes out of your mouth is revealing of your outlook of the world and speaks more about you than it does about the situation you’re describing.

Here’s an alarming statistic. Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, who specializes in organizational behavior, didn’t believe the statistic that 65% of conversations in the workplace are about two things, “People talking about how smart, special, and wonderful they are (or listening to someone else brag in that way about them self), or people talking about how stupid, inept, or bad someone else is.

He thought it seemed outrageous, so he challenged the study and conducted his own… well, 65% was dead on.

How quickly do you think you will stand out as an extraordinary human when you focus your conversations on ideas and leave the petty conversations for others?

From Success to Significance

Thank God it’s Monday!™ The legendary management consultant, Peter Drucker, was known for his “five questions” that he used to start every conversation with a new client. The first one was “what is your mission?”

If your answer is to make money, you’ll probably find it in short supply. Why? Because money comes to those who create great value, but without a passion to create that value, money is elusive.

What is your mission statement? How do you use your uniqueness to fix the wrongs of the world as you see them? A mission statement formula simply lists how you use one or two of your unique qualities to create a utopic world as you define it. An example is “I use my visionary thinking and inspiration to challenge people to live their potential.” Or, “I use my organization skills to people get better results at work.”

Know that when you focus on your personal mission, BOTH success and significance come readily.

Live large. Somebody has to do it. That somebody who GETS to do it is YOU!

Sticks and Stones Can Break My Bones…

Thank God it’s Monday!™ The other night as I was working late, in comes Matt, the man who cleans our offices. He mentioned that he heard me discuss gossip on a Minneapolis television special. He went on to say that for years he’s been cleaning offices, and that he never ceases to be shocked about how much gossip he hears people spew while he’s cleaning around them. “Don’t they get that as soon as they walk away from that gossip, that they’ll be the next victim?” he asked.

Good point, Matt. People who gossip aren’t discriminating and neither are those who listen to it.

Try a little experiment. Do the opposite. Decide to say something positive about everyone you work around. At the end of the day, see how you feel about yourself. IF someone says something nasty about another, tell them a nice thing about that person and ask them to please go make a direct request of that person they’re complaining about.

Now, THAT makes it all interesting. You get to feel good about YOU, AND you get to teach others around you how to be of excellent character.

Have a hoot spreading the joy…

Confessions of a Recovering Workplace Gossip

So you’ve never gossiped, you say – never talked about a colleague behind her back, never spread a juicy rumor.  Congratulations!  I don’t believe you.

Okay, I suppose it’s possible.  But most of you out there have probably indulged in this bad behavior at some point.  I’m sorry to say there was a time when I did as well.  Then I came to realize how poisonous and destructive workplace gossip is.  Now I spend my time spreading the anti-gossip gospel.

A workplace full of whispered gossip is excruciating.  It is destructive to the soul of your workplace and the souls of the people in it.  They never feel safe, always wondering who is talking behind their backs.

Jack has a problem with Tom. So what does Jack do? He tells Lynne, and Jess, and Steve, and Jim, and Sandy.  Everyone, that is, but Tom.

It gets even better. Jack quickly realizes he can’t trust Lynne, Jess, Steve, Jim, or Sandy. They are the kind of people who welcome gossip, you see, and people who accept gossip tend to be equal-opportunity mudslingers. Soon enough, they’ll be welcoming gossip about Jack.

Okay, now let’s suppose you’ve got the message.  You’ve quit cold turkey on gossiping and backstabbing.  But what do you do when someone ELSE comes to you with gossip?

You can certainly put your fingers in your ears and hum the 1812 Overture while tap dancing.  But that won’t do anything to help Jack out of his own nasty gossiping habit.  And since it’s your watering hole he’s muddying, you have a vested interest in helping him on the road to recovery.

Next time Jack comes to you with complaints about Tom, simply say, “Gee, this sounds serious!  Let’s go talk to Tom directly so you can work this out.” When he looks panic-stricken, underline the point: “Well is this a serious problem or isn’t it?  I can’t do anything to help you solve it – only Tom can do that. So please promise me you’re heading directly there. If it isn’t serious, then what are we talking about?”

This approach may or may not shock Jack into giving up gossip, but it will certainly send a message that YOU are not an available receiver.  It also lets him know that you will not be gossiping behind his back – a positive message in and of itself.

Can’t… Have a Hangnail

Thank God it’s Monday!™ You know the folks… the ones who need to go home early because they have a hangnail. But how about you? How resilient are you when you have a hangnail? Well, we don’t care about the hangnails, but would people describe you as fragile or resilient?

Let’s figure it out.

When you lose a deal, do you A: say, “Not a problem, I’ll get the next one and I KNOW they’ll come back anyway.” B: get bummed out and lose confidence, or C: get demoralized and decide to sort your paperclips for the remainder of the day while you polish your resume?

When your boss tells you that your project missed the mark, do you A: say “Thank you for letting me know. Please tell me all the ways I can improve this because I really need to know.” B: make yet another feeble attempt at fixing it with no input because your ego is bruised, or C: spend the next 20 minutes in the bathroom crying about how unfair your boss is?

When you walk into a break room and hear the conversation stop do you think A: they must be so excited to start a conversation with me that they decided to stop their current topic, B: ask “Waz up?” or C: decide they MUST be talking about how strange I am and go home in tears.

EVEN if the dweebs ARE complaining about you, why would you let them get you down? They are simply unaware that they are displaying their lack of good character since you already know that a complaint tells you more about a complainer than anything else.

If you aren’t scoring A’s right across the board, toughen up. Be a reverse paranoid and assume that EVERYTHING is coming up roses, you actually are ON the side where the grass is greener, and everyone just wants to be YOU!
