Learn to Say No

Monday, June 27th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ It’s every single day. Someone finds you out of nowhere, and asks you to help them in some way or another. How do you say no?

First, realize that it is completely fine to say no when appropriate. Say a client suggests that you come by their office for a conversation that would ordinarily take 10 minutes. But now with the commute, you’re looking at an hour—maybe an hour and a half. An hour you can’t afford to give up today.

Allow the client to make that decision for you. Perhaps you could conduct this conversation over the webcam. Tell your client that this would eliminate the required charge for out of office consulting.

Or perhaps Chris, from the cubicle next to yours, pokes his head around the corner in hopes that you can help him with a project he’s been assigned to. Make it clear that you appreciate his thinking of you, but that you will not be able to assist him until Tuesday, or whatever it may be.

Commit yourself to the tasks that are the highest and best use of your time. Learn to say no to the rest when appropriate.

Have a great Monday!

Perception Wins

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Success in the marketplace is not so much a measure of quality as it is a measure of the perception of quality.

Take for instance the historic competition between Pepsi and Coke. You would think that Coke tastes better, given that it consistently outsells its competitor. But does it really?

The Pepsi Challenge revealed otherwise. After conducting nationwide blind taste tests, the conclusion was undeniable. 57% of consumers preferred the taste of Pepsi compared to the 43% who preferred the taste of Coke. Interesting, isn’t it?

You don’t have to be the best. But you do have to be perceived as the best. Perception is everything. Create a great perception.

Have a great Monday!

Be Likeable

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Thank God it’s Monday!™ The formula for getting others to like you is quite simple. First of all, use the person’s name. Dale Carnegie says that the sweetest name in the English language is a person’s name.

As you get to know each other, ask questions about their lives and genuinely care about their answers. And if you don’t inherently care, learn to care. Others can sense superficiality, and so decide to become genuine.

As discussion goes on, spend time speaking about topics that coincide with their interests. It’s really that simple. The more questions you ask of others, the more you make them feel like they matter to you. Before you know it, nobody will be able to resist liking you!

How Do You Want Others to Describe You?

Monday, March 7th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ In his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey walks you through a meditation wherein you attend your own funeral.

Not surprisingly, it stimulates some pretty far-reaching thought. Think for a second about your own funeral. How would others describe you? As a friend? As a coworker? As a parent?

Life is hectic, and life is unexpected. And life can be incredibly fast-paced. But never let things move so quickly that you forget who you are and what you are truly doing.

Take a minute, and play the scene out. Be honest with yourself. Be fair. Are you leaving the legacy that you intend to leave?
