Thank the Boss

Monday, October 31st, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!® There’s nothing like appreciation. Hearing a few words of appreciation for a job well done can turn a bad day around on a dime. Fill your workplace with a culture of appreciation and watch productivity and engagement soar.

We often express appreciation to those who work for us or with us, but there’s one direction the compliments rarely flow: uphill, to the boss. And the further up the hill you go, the less likely an executive is to hear the kind of praise that sustains us all.

So when your manager or even the CEO does something really well, take a minute to let him or her know that you noticed, and it’s appreciated. It’ll mean all the more because it is so rare.

Have a great Monday!

The Authentic Commitment

Monday, October 24th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!® Ever make a commitment, only to get that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach because you know you can’t see it through? Sure you have. We all have. And the question is, what do you do next?

Too many people let the clock tick away until the deadline arrives, and then they announce that they won’t be able to deliver after all. That’s inauthentic and it damages trust. Instead, when you’re getting that sinking feeling, listen to it, and step up immediately and say, “You know what? I might have answered too quickly. I don’t want to make this commitment unless I’m absolutely certain that I can get it done on time. Can I get back to you later today or negotiate a different deadline?”

When you make an authentic commitment, there’s an expansive, open feeling because you know you can deliver on the promise you’ve made. Paying attention to the feeling that comes with every commitment you make is key to building trust. And trust is key to success.

Time Management

Monday, October 17th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!® Time management—no matter what line of work you’re in you know it’s one of the keys to success. Of course the people who need it the most are usually the least likely to do it because they don’t have… time! You’ve got to make the time.

Clear an hour on your calendar now. Create a list of every major project for the next quarter. Break each project into steps, then lay those steps into a weekly calendar—a series for each week. As each week approaches, break it out further into daily action plans.

Suppose I had to write a workbook for a conference. Finish the workbook by October first is kind of a weak goal. Instead, if I break it down into specific steps, like, the section outlines will be done in the first week and I will finish one section each week for the next six weeks. Finally, I’ll prepare the appendix and edit the manuscript in the last week. Now, that workbook will actually get done on time.

Do the same with every other project. Lay out the steps into your weekly plans and watch your personal productivity go through the roof.

Have a great Monday!

Seeing What Isn’t There

Monday, October 10th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!® People aren’t hired because they can do the job. Most who didn’t get the job could’ve fulfilled the job description easily. The people who are hired are those who demonstrate the ability to see what isn’t there, and should be, and make it happen. Now, that’s job security.

Saying something like, “nobody told me” or “it’s not in my job description” is a first class ticket to the unemployment line. Instead, if you see something that needs to be done, don’t put a note in the suggestion box—step up and make it happen. Think like a leader. Leadership is not a position; it’s a way of being.

Develop a reputation for seeing what isn’t there and making it happen and you’ll be amazed at all the doors swinging open for you.

Over-Communicate

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!® Bosses do not like surprises. That’s one of the many reasons you should over-communicate with your boss whenever possible.

At the beginning of a project or initiative, get clear directions about the results and processes that he or she expects. Then as you work, report frequently on where you are in the process, what your struggles are and what you’re doing to overcome them. Never leave out the bad news—your struggles, your roadblocks; a manager who only hears ‘happy-happy, joy-joy’ will quickly turn suspicious and out comes the snoopy nose.

A boss I had in my twenties used to say, “Tell me the good news, tell me the bad news, but don’t ever surprise me.” I didn’t—and as a result—he never micromanaged my work. Daily and weekly reporting about where you are compared to your work plan will earn trust and everybody will be happy.
