The Gift That Actually Builds Culture

Most leaders think the holidays are about slowing down. The best leaders know they’re actually about showing up.

As kids, Christmas was about what we received. As adults, the real advantage comes from something far more powerful—being fully present with others. Not distracted. Not rushed. Not transactional. Present.

This mindset shift is especially critical at work. Customers don’t just want service. Employees don’t just want direction. People want to be heard, understood, and valued. Presence is what turns ordinary interactions into trust-building moments.

Here’s what presence delivers inside organizations:

Stronger relationships because people feel genuinely seen and heard

Deeper loyalty from customers who know you understand their world

Higher performance when employees feel valued, not managed

During the holidays—and beyond—leaders have a unique opportunity. To slow down long enough to listen. To engage without an agenda. To recognize that culture is built in moments, not meetings.

When leaders choose presence over pace, everything changes: morale rises, trust deepens, and results follow.

As you move through this season, consider where being more present could make the biggest impact—with your team, your customers, and the people you spend most of your time with.

Watch now.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you. As I think about my life growing up, I loved Christmas because we would get presents. And as a kid, that was a really cool thing. As an adult, I’ve discovered that there’s something even better than receiving presents—and that is being present for other people.

Being there with them. Listening to them. Being there with the customer. Hearing what’s going on in their lives. Finding ways to help them.

That is the great opportunity. So, as you look at this holiday season, think about how you could be more present to those that you love—and to those that you love at work. And let’s face it, we do get to love the people we work with, because we spend more time with them, oftentimes, than we do with our own families.

Discovering how to be present with others brings great power. Let’s give it a try.

Merry Christmas to you.
