Exceeding the Minimum

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Thank God it’s Monday!® Do you pay the minimum amount on your credit cards each month? If you do, you might want to take a close look at your next statement. Give the minimum and it can take seven to ten years, or twelve years, to pay off the balance. But pay more than the minimum and you’ll polish it off in a fraction of that time—and pay a whole lot less interest.

Now apply the same logic to your job. If you’re just doing the minimum, you might be digging yourself a hole. If you think it’s okay to have your coat on at 4:59, for example, you might end up being the first one out the door in a whole new way. Instead, make a point of exceeding the requirements of your job. Blowing past expectations is the best way to make yourself irreplaceable.

Have a great Monday!

Appreciation

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Thank God it’s Monday!™ “Nobody appreciates me.” “I never get a pat on the back for a job well done.” We’ve heard all these complaints before and most of us have even given those from time to time. It’s no fun to feel unappreciated. But the answer, believe me, is NOT to complain about it. The answer is to become part of the solution.

Most under-appreciated employees are not alone in their misery. They’re usually part of a workplace with no culture of appreciation. The best thing you can do in this situation is to help create that culture. Express appreciation at least 20 times today, not just for what people do around you, but for who they are. Watch the faces of people whose days are made by your simple act of kindness. In no time at all, you will find yourself on the receiving end. When you help to create a culture of appreciation, everybody wins.

Have a great Monday!
