In Survival Mode? Snap Out of It!

It’s a common story in several industries now. After several years of pain, business is picking up again in a big way. But the workforce was cut to the bone to survive the tough times, and now the reduced staff is busy scrambling just to keep the ship afloat. There’s no time or energy to capitalize on the HUGE opportunities coming down the pike.

So you’re an employee who is paying attention. You know it’s time to snap out of survival mode and get your company booming again. But management is still trembling in the corner, hyperventilating and counting coppers. What do you do?

You’ve got to sound the alarm! You’ve seen the opportunities. Now it’s time to wake everyone else up.

But I’m not a manager, you say. It’s not my place to tell the Big Kahunas what’s going on. NONSENSE. Lemme tell ya, sometimes the Big Kahuna’s seat has the worst view. That’s why it’s important to remember that leadership is not a position—it’s a way of being. YOU can be the one who brings enlightenment to your workplace by showing others the way. You do it by:

  1. Recognizing your own power and talents
  2. Identifying organizational needs, and
  3. Finding ways to leverage your own power to address those needs.

If the need of the moment is to snap the company out of survival mode so it can start grabbing opportunities, step one is to get some firm data behind your observations. Do some solid research, then present a one-page written report to management about how to capitalize on the new opportunities.

Presentation is important. It can’t be a bunch of doodles on a napkin. To wake them from survival mode, you’ll have to explain the situation clearly and well, with ALL the supporting data in a concise and compelling way.

A year from now, when the company is riding high on the opportunities you pointed out, your personal and professional stock will be bullish!
