Indecision IS a Decision

Monday, October 28th, 2013

The center snaps the ball. The quarterback drops back for the pass. How long does he have to decide what to do with that ball?

On average, he has three seconds to get the ball to the right receiver. Imagine that. After that, he’s likely to end up on the ground.

Now imagine the quarterback getting up and whining, “I didn’t have enough information to make a decision! Lemme do that over.”

Fat chance. He made a decision, all right. Indecision is a decision to do nothing. And the consequences can be huge.

It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in—business is about making decisions. But sometimes we find ourselves paralyzed, unable to make a decision for fear of making the wrong one. So we say we’re “waiting for more data” or “crunching the numbers” before we decide.

It’s important to be well informed. But there’s always more information to be had, and there comes a time when the lack of a decision begins to impact the outcome. At that point, indecision is a decision. It’s the decision to do nothing.

For every project, give yourself a timeline not just for the outcome, but for the decision making process that leads to that outcome. Say, “By November 14, the budget will be set. By November 21, all design specs will be in place.” Then hold yourself to those project benchmarks. Make a decision and keep things moving.

Thank the Boss

Thank God it’s Monday!® There’s nothing like appreciation. Hearing a few words of appreciation for a job well done can turn a bad day around on a dime. Fill your workplace with a culture of appreciation and watch productivity and engagement soar.

We often express appreciation to those who work for us or with us, but there’s one direction the compliments rarely flow: uphill, to the boss. And the further up the hill you go, the less likely an executive is to hear the kind of praise that sustains us all.

So when your manager or even the CEO does something really well, take a minute to let him or her know that you noticed, and it’s appreciated. It’ll mean all the more because it is so rare.

Have a great Monday!

This is Your Team

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Leadership in the workplace entails stepping up and doing the right thing, whether or not management is on board… and believe it or not, management can often be the source of the problem. They are just humans after all.

Though the situation is never welcome, it happens. And when it happens, do you keep secrets and remain silent, or do you speak up.

Your company is your team. When the chemistry isn’t right, the coach will make changes. When the players don’t understand what the coach has to say, they ask questions. If something doesn’t seem right, discuss it. If something isn’t working, change it.

You are the player. But more importantly, you are the coach. This is your team. And if you believe that the management has made a mistake, speak up, show them what you think with respect and kindness—they will be grateful for your input.

Have a great Monday!

Renegotiate Before the Breakdown

Monday, November 29th, 2010

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ It’s a busy day in the office. John just set a mountain of papers on your desk and you agreed to look over them. You told Gary that you’d have the report to him by mid-afternoon, and… well, you haven’t started. Then to add to the load, you’re a million emails behind.

By the looks of it, there are three directions you can take. Most easily, you can give up. Make no attempt, because these tasks are so overwhelming. Alternatively, you can work. And by work I mean in-the-zone, can’t-stop-me type work.

So you step up and choose the second option, but nonetheless realize that you physically cannot bring these projects to completion. So you go the third route: renegotiate before you miss the deadline.

It is all about living your word and maintaining a clear and direct line of communication. Approach the person who assigned the task and propose an alternative deadline. Having done all that you can do, chances are that they will be fine with the change.

It’s not missing the deadline that typically puts people on edge—though repeatedly doing so is a huge issue. Rather, it is the surprise of a missed deadline that is troublesome. Keep your integrity and live your word by renegotiating before the breakdown.
