Sway on the Positive Side

Monday, May 9th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ In Ori and Rom Brafman’s New York Times Bestseller, Sway, the two describe an interesting experiment conducted at MIT. An economics class had a substitute teacher. Before he entered the classroom, the members of the class were all given slips of paper with his bio. In the section listing ways that others describe him, half the students read that he was ‘rather cold,’ while the other students read that he was ‘very warm’—unaware that there were two versions floating around.

After the class, students filled out evaluations. Those that had read he was ‘rather cold’ consistently gave poor reviews–describing the substitute as “self-centered, formal, and unsociable.” Conversely, those who had been provided with the positive descriptor consistently provided positive reviews—”funny, likeable, intelligent.”

So what does all this mean? A single word can alter your interpretation of reality. Preconceived notions blind us to what truly exists. How do you open your heart to hold people in the best possible light by giving them the benefit of the doubt?

Have a great Monday!

Relish the Journey

Monday, April 25th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Imagine that I press a magical button and you’re on top of a mountain. The view is breathtaking. You see for miles: rivers, valleys, trees, and elk roaming a valley.

Now imagine that you had to climb that mountain. You had to sweat. You had to work. You had to push beyond what you’d previously thought possible. Don’t you think the view would now be just a bit more breathtaking?

Denis Waitley’s words are right on: “Winners take the time to relish their work, knowing that scaling the mountain is what makes the view from the top so very exhilarating.” Love the challenges you face. Relish the journey.

Have a great Monday!

Out on the Skinny Branches

Monday, April 18th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ I’m not sure where the notion gained acceptance, but sometimes the unwise will suggest that it is not okay to make mistakes. I argue the contrary.

Mistakes often indicate that you’ve tried something new. Mistakes often result from action. But most importantly, mistakes are always learning opportunities, provided you learn the lesson so that you don’t repeat that same mistake.

It is incredibly easy to find your groove and continue on fearlessly in that groove. But sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone and let yourself fall. You will not be successful every time. But if you never step into the unknown, out onto the skinny branches, you’ll never achieve the success you desire.

We Have to Stop Meeting Like This

Monday, April 4th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ We’ve all been there: the meeting that takes an hour to accomplish five minutes of work. Learn to effectively manage your meetings to avoid this. How do you do that?

Start by creating an actionable agenda, with a preset time allocated for each topic. Everything on that agenda must be actionable toward a completion. Instead of saying, “discuss hiring a marketing coordinator,” you could say, “define the marketing coordinator’s role, and define the plan to recruit.”

Then, delegate the task of the timekeeper to a meeting attendee who will work to keep everyone on track and keep everyone to the agenda.

You are here to solve problems and move on to great opportunities. To do that, you must create effectiveness with your time.
