Owning Your Projections

Owning Your Projections

I will never forget about a lesson I learned one day. I was listening to a friend of mine who was a retired episcopal priest. I was in awe of his brilliance and his kindness. I interrupted him one time and I said, “I have to say, Richard, you are one of the most brilliant people I have ever met, and I am so amazed by what you have created in your life.” and he said to me, “Thank you for the projection.”
and I said, “What?”

“I used to be a priest” he said, and when people really felt good about themselves, they projected good things unto me, and when people weren’t feeling really good about themselves, they projected their ugliness unto me. And I realized if what they are saying was good or bad, it was not about me. It was about their projection.”

Be fully aware of what you are projecting unto other people because it’s more of a statement about where you are as a human being.

Doesn’t the world look better when you decide to come from the world view that says: People are good, I trust people, and I intend to make good things happen? Try that on, and I promise you that your projections will change, you will see the world differently, and suddenly — everyone is nice.

Are you breathing life into life?

Monday, July 10th, 2017

In life, I find people are either breathing life into life or they’re sucking it out, and at every moment of every day, you’re that person. You’re never creating a neutral experience. So when you’re given the chance to deal with something, realize that no matter how bad it is, you could be approaching it in a way where you’re breathing life into life, and saying, “Okay, that happened. Not so good. We’ve got to recover on this one. What are we going to do?”

Notice how different that is compared to, “Oh, my gosh. Nobody told me this. This is never going to work. Nobody ever cares about me.” Hear the difference? Be the person who has a spirit that conquers all and is bringing positive energy to the team as being the person they can count on to always bring a good and happy, unconquerable attitude to work every day.

Do you ever waste time?

Do You Ever Waste Time? Yeah, I think we all do; but time is the great leveler. It’s the difference between the billionaire, and someone making a small fraction of what the billionaire is making.

It’s how we use our time, it’s about behavioral economics. Do we always keep ourselves in the highest and best use of our time? It’s easy for us to get caught up in the little things.

Here is one of the best ways to get yourself much more proactive in being productive to the few right things. Every week, at the end of the week, make a list for the following week of all the key, most important things to do. Not the to-do list, that’s different, you can keep that someplace else.

What’s the highest and best use of your time? and then do the A1, and then do the A2, prioritize yourself and tell yourself that “Based on priority is how I am going to spend my time.”

Be the person who always keeps yourself in your highest and best use of time, and I promise you — you will double, triple, quadruple your performance quickly compared to the people who are basically reacting to the fire in front of them at that moment.

Be the person that’s focused on the few right things.

Become a Problem Solver

Did you answer the ad that said, “Looking for a potential new employee who can find everything wrong with the company, point it out to anybody who can’t do something about it and complain incessantly about how much they don’t like being at that place.”? Yeah, I don’t think so. And yet, when you look at Galve’s research, over 87% of people think they responded to that ad because that’s how they’re playing the game, but here’s the thing-if you’re living that way, you’re living in a small fraction of your potential. There’s so much more in you when you start bringing positiveness to the game. You see, if you have a business, you got problems so you need to understand how can you bring solutions instead.

What if, from now on whenever you saw something that was wrong, you went only to someone who could fix it with a solution and said, “Here’s the situation. Here’s the information. Here’s my recommendation.”? What if you became that person that decided you were really responding to the ad that said, “Looking for someone who can move needles, hit deadlines and find things that are wrong in the organization and fix them.”? You see, that’s why jobs exist. And so don’t be confused by thinking that you responded to the first ad because I promise you a huge career breakthrough when you shift to being the person who looks for ways to help and fixes whatever it is to make everything better immediately.

Never listen to negative comments

Have you heard the story about the visiting professor who when he came in to do his guest lecture—half the people who were in the room walked in through one door and received a little flyer that said, “Great guy, brilliant. You’re going to love today.”? The other half of the room walked in a different door, received a different form that said, “He’s brilliant, but he’s a bit of a jerk.” Guess what the research showed when they walked back out the door?
When surveyed, the people who were told that he’s brilliant and wonderful and kind said exactly that. Those who were told that he was evil incarnate said exactly that. That is why you should never listen to someone say something negative about another person. What if they were saying that about you? I want that to settle in. What if they said that about you? How would that feel? How safe do you feel in the work place?

So here’s the commitment that you need to make. If anyone starts to say something negative to one another, you’re already sucked in and you have an ethical responsibility at that moment, not to say, “You need to go talk to so and so” because they won’t—you need to say, “There’s always two opinions about that. Let’s go find out what Jimmy has to say about that and find out exactly what his opinion is.” Let’s come from an ethical place that respects other human beings and let them be free to be safe in the workplace. Can you sign up for that? Because if you don’t, I guarantee you if you’re saying hurtful things about others, they’re going to say hurtful things about you. Let’s keep it clean and build a workplace where you love to be.
