Show You Care

Monday, April 17th, 2017

Imagine walking in and having everybody in your workplace say, “Huh, look who just walked in, love on wheels.” Well, it’s unlikely but what if you had the essence of someone who showed you cared every day because that’s really what love is—it’s showing you care. Not just caring, showing you care because if you really care, you’re going to care about the outcomes of your team members, the deadlines being hit, the quality of what goes out to your customers, delivery dates. Everything would be something you care about, the success of your teammates.

What if you made a decision before you walked in every day to be love on wheels? How would that change who you are and what you do?

I have a challenge for you. For the next week, everyday walk in thinking, “How will I be love on wheels today?” and see how showing that you care shows up in catapulting your results and noticing what an impact you’re making on the world because that’s what it’s all about.

Keep your goals visible

Thursday, November 17th, 2016

You made a New Year’s resolution to set goals, and you’re doing it. Bravo! But are you doing it as effectively as possible?

Goals are only effective if you act on them, and you can’t act on them if you can’t see them. Too many people create a list of personal or professional goals, then sock it away in a drawer somewhere. Those goals are as good as dead. They will never happen.

Instead of filing them away, create a very visible place for those goals.

I have a friend who made her list of goals the screensaver on her computer. She sees them a hundred times a day, which means there’s a good chance she’ll achieve them. Laminate them and put them up in the shower. Stick them to your steering wheel. Whatever it takes to keep them front and center.

Organize your goals into separate lists according to timescale—goals for the week, for the month, and for life.

Don’t include everything. Life offers thousands of opportunities, but maybe ten of those will take you where you want to go. Don’t let those crucial ten get lost in a list a mile long. Focus on the ones that count, then post them where you’ll see them every single day.

Focus on the Right Things

Monday, October 24th, 2016

Let’s just admit, we’re all been guilty of giving the excuse, “I’m WAY too busy,” or “I don’t have time for one more thing.”

Often, if you really thought about it, you’d realize that it’s not that you have too much to do, it’s that you’re spending too much time on the things that don’t matter.

The people who complain the most are the ones that usually are best at manufacturing work where none exists as an excuse to not do the most critical things. Like making time to sort the paper clips…

Instead, be in the highest and best use of your time constantly.

  • Make a list of everything you plan on doing today.
  • Next, go through the list and cross off anything that’s not critical. Things that don’t generate revenue or move the company ahead.
  • Then, stick to the list!
  • Block times for those “big rocks”—projects that need extreme focus, and let the “sand” fill in the rest of your day.

You’ll be amazed how much you will accomplish—so get focused NOW!

Be Direct

Friday, September 30th, 2016

Every employee who disagrees with a policy or a decision has a choice: ignore it, whine about it, or be direct.

Ignoring something you don’t agree with is fine, so long as you feel the difference of opinion is not a serious error. If you feel that a policy or decision is harmful in a way that really matters, you have an obligation as a member of the team to voice your concern.

But here’s the thing: Don’t whisper your concern in a “meeting outside of the meeting.” That’s destructive to the team. Don’t cross your arms, roll your eyes, and whine to your colleagues who have no way to influence the outcome.

If it doesn’t matter, forget it! But if it does, you have an obligation to put your grownup pants on and head straight for the decision makers who can do something about it.

If those decision makers are worth their salt, and you present the idea calmly and clearly, your stock will go up in their eyes.

Busy Being Busy

Monday, September 19th, 2016

We all know people who spend half their time telling others how overwhelmed they are, funny thing though, you sometimes need a microscope to find what they actually accomplished. But they seem so busy, so committed, that management sometimes finds it hard to say anything. But they keep on being busy, busy, busy.

Then there are those who are quietly and happily productive—and end up with the lion’s share of the outcome riding on their shoulders.

The perception of hard work should never be a cover up for ineffective work. No matter where you are in the company, it isn’t kind to the whole team to let someone ride along on that perception without making a real contribution.

A feeling of being overwhelmed isn’t something to be proud of—it’s a problem in need of a solution. Be that solution. Next time someone whines to you about how busy they are, make suggestions for using their time more efficiently. If you are that person, realize that you could shave hours off your work, and do the same work, and be happier at the end of the process.
