Define Your Personal Non-Negotiables

Monday, August 1st, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ All too often it seems as if individuals have no clear sense of what is important in their lives, what is flexible, and what is not.

Non-flexible tasks may include revenue generating projects at the office, time spent with family, exercise, time with friends…

Have a clear sense of what is important to you. Under the stress of the workplace, people often sacrifice some of the true essentials. Define your personal non-negotiables and call yourself tight when you are out of alignment.

Have a great Monday!

Don’t Let the Hurt Get You Down

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Thank God it’s Monday!™ In a confusing way, our understanding of anything is dependent on balance. We can describe darkness, simply because we’ve seen light. We can feel heat, because we’re not cold. In fact, if the concept or literal understanding of cold didn’t exist, and there was simply one standard of heat… well perhaps we’d say nothing of temperature at all… temperature would,
just be.

The same is true for experience. How can you know true happiness without ever having been hurt? In the midst of the hardest times, realize that in a sense you are creating an easily surpassed standard… rather than get down, use that experience as a gauge to feel better in the long run about everything! Choose your joy by understanding every day is a possibility of a better day.

Have a great Monday!

Embrace Change

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Change is rapid. Change is accelerating exponentially. In fact, it is not too outrageous to assume that today’s jobs will not even exist 10 years from now… and you can’t do a darn thing about it.

No person is guaranteed a job, but you can guarantee your employability. The military strategist Sun Tsu said, “In times of peace, prepare for war, and in times of war, prepare for peace.” You may not love the change. You may not have had anything to do with the change, but at the end of the day, it is your job to make the transition to change, and make you a better you.

Have a great Monday!

Learn to Say No

Monday, June 27th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ It’s every single day. Someone finds you out of nowhere, and asks you to help them in some way or another. How do you say no?

First, realize that it is completely fine to say no when appropriate. Say a client suggests that you come by their office for a conversation that would ordinarily take 10 minutes. But now with the commute, you’re looking at an hour—maybe an hour and a half. An hour you can’t afford to give up today.

Allow the client to make that decision for you. Perhaps you could conduct this conversation over the webcam. Tell your client that this would eliminate the required charge for out of office consulting.

Or perhaps Chris, from the cubicle next to yours, pokes his head around the corner in hopes that you can help him with a project he’s been assigned to. Make it clear that you appreciate his thinking of you, but that you will not be able to assist him until Tuesday, or whatever it may be.

Commit yourself to the tasks that are the highest and best use of your time. Learn to say no to the rest when appropriate.

Have a great Monday!

Perception Wins

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ Success in the marketplace is not so much a measure of quality as it is a measure of the perception of quality.

Take for instance the historic competition between Pepsi and Coke. You would think that Coke tastes better, given that it consistently outsells its competitor. But does it really?

The Pepsi Challenge revealed otherwise. After conducting nationwide blind taste tests, the conclusion was undeniable. 57% of consumers preferred the taste of Pepsi compared to the 43% who preferred the taste of Coke. Interesting, isn’t it?

You don’t have to be the best. But you do have to be perceived as the best. Perception is everything. Create a great perception.

Have a great Monday!
