The Innocent Pest

Monday, May 16th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ We all know this person from back in elementary school—the suck up. Sure, they disappeared back in middle school, kept hiding throughout high school and college, but now, they’ve reemerged—right in your office!

They seek out every opportunity to shoot the breeze with the boss. They offer phony compliments to the management team. But when nobody else is watching, they step all over you. Let’s hope you don’t have one of those. But if you do, what do you do?

First of all, realize that you are not the only one who’s aware of this. And even if others are not consciously aware of what’s going on, we as humans have a way of sensing when something is not legit. Secondly, you can choose to not let it bother you! I know, I know. Easier said than done—but there’s so much truth in that single thought.

As far as I’m concerned, the suck up is annoying but harms nobody. Your boss, no doubt, sees it too. Life is all about the characters we cross paths with. That’s what makes things interesting. Choose to enjoy this innocent pest.

Have a great Monday!

Sway on the Positive Side

Monday, May 9th, 2011

* Transcription

Thank God it’s Monday!™ In Ori and Rom Brafman’s New York Times Bestseller, Sway, the two describe an interesting experiment conducted at MIT. An economics class had a substitute teacher. Before he entered the classroom, the members of the class were all given slips of paper with his bio. In the section listing ways that others describe him, half the students read that he was ‘rather cold,’ while the other students read that he was ‘very warm’—unaware that there were two versions floating around.

After the class, students filled out evaluations. Those that had read he was ‘rather cold’ consistently gave poor reviews–describing the substitute as “self-centered, formal, and unsociable.” Conversely, those who had been provided with the positive descriptor consistently provided positive reviews—”funny, likeable, intelligent.”

So what does all this mean? A single word can alter your interpretation of reality. Preconceived notions blind us to what truly exists. How do you open your heart to hold people in the best possible light by giving them the benefit of the doubt?

Have a great Monday!

How Do You Want Others to Describe You?

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Thank God it’s Monday!™ In his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey walks you through a meditation wherein you attend your own funeral.

Not surprisingly, it stimulates some pretty far-reaching thought. Think for a second about your own funeral. How would others describe you? As a friend? As a coworker? As a parent?

Life is hectic, and life is unexpected. And life can be incredibly fast-paced. But never let things move so quickly that you forget who you are and what you are truly doing.

Take a minute, and play the scene out. Be honest with yourself. Be fair. Are you leaving the legacy that you intend to leave?

Thank God it’s Monday!™ After recording his first album Sittin’ In, Kenny Loggins felt lost. He had finally achieved what had been his lifelong dream. And now, after getting there, where was he to go?

Performing in a show soon thereafter, Kenny found himself struggling to get the crowd engaged… until he saw the eyes of a young child looking up at him…

He claims that her “face was radiant… just pouring love at me.”Only then did Kenny open his heart. And as he did so, the eyes of more fans lit up. The outpouring of love swept the whole crowd. Before the song had finished, the entire crowd had risen to its feet.

Try opening your own heart and allowing your love to pour outward. Pretty soon, you too will have the whole crowd standing.
